Mosaics: Making mosaics run creative workshops for schools or groups in the ancient and fascinating medium of mosaic. Making a mosaic is an enjoyable activity; it motivates, encourages teamwork, helps with dexterity and it is a lot of fun!
Projects can be one off workshops, run over several sessions or even designed for teaching staff to implement.
Workshops involve small groups of children creating simple mosaic pictures, based on their own drawings using smashed up kitchen tiles.
The broken pieces are (with adult support) placed into a concrete adhesive and later grouted. The children are involved at every stage. Alternatively, mesh can be used with PVA glue.
Alternative workshop ideas involve the use of pattern making which can tie into the maths’ national curriculum (estimating, sorting and symmetry etc). Using little square glass mosaic tiles, repeat patterns are created, which make very attractive murals when displayed en masse.
